Hawaiian Style Open Pit BioChar
Kalani Permaculture Series – Feb 28th
Series Description:
The Modern Ahupuaʻa Permaculture Series is a monthly discussion around permaculture and sustainability in Puna. This special gathering is intended to provide a space for Puna residents to gather knowledge, practices and social strategies. Join us each month for a different speaker and share your ideas of what Modern Ahupuhaʻa means to you.
This unprecedented initiative involves all of the key leaders in permaculture and sustainability in Puna: co-stewarded by Kalani and Hawaiian Sanctuary, and actively supported by Laʻakea, the Keliihoomalu ʻOhana in Kalapana, many of Puna's local permaculturists, and financially supported by the County of Hawaiʻi through the stewardship of Greggor Ilagan.

Josiah Hunt:
Josiah Hunt is a naturalist, a farmer, and a biocharista. From his rural home on the Big Island of Hawaii he helped to pioneer methods for biochar production, processing, and application in farming systems using organic and biological approaches. He is the founder of Pacific Biochar and has been working with plants and soil since the late ‘90s. Locally, he is famous for his successes with commercial scale organic papaya cultivation, which was thought to be impossible. Josiah is a hard working man, a dedicated father, and when the waves are good you may likely find him in a “board meeting” with Mother Nature.
