Under a new pilot program, Hawaii farmers have until July 13 to submit their bids to sell fresh fruit and vegetables to various public schools around the state.

The state Department of Education is working together with the state Department of Agriculture on the program, called the Farm to School Initiative. Its goals are to address the supply and demand issues surrounding the purchasing of local food for school cafeterias and to increase state purchases of reasonably priced local food for school menus.
