Instructor Hisae Shouse will demonstrate the art of Sumi-e. The Japanese art of Sumi-e, or ink painting, involves limiting details to capture the essence of the subject. The art requires only simple materials such as black ink, water, rice paper, and brushes. With these materials, an artist may produce an infinite variety of tones and paint strokes on washi paper. The demonstration will be held in the First Floor Reading Room.
