Synopsis:
Livin’ On a Rock tells the story of how a big island (Hawaii) shapes a small music scene. Starting with the famous tourist performer, Bosco: The Amazing One-Man Band, local filmmaker Steven Roby covers the island of Hawaii’s hard to find music scenes.
Despite a limited number of tiny venues miles apart, the musicians of Hawaii island have found ways to cultivate their craft. Whether it’s open mic nights, farmer’s markets, or low paying one night stands, the tenacious performers are a sturdy bunch. Those who land steady resort gigs are the fortunate few who can say they have a full-time job in the music business.
One of the bright spots for the musicians is the annual Hawaii Songwriting Festival, a three-day event where locals get insider tips from mainland Grammy and Emmy winners. Several of these instructors offer their insights about the Big Island scene throughout the film.
