Read Across America is the National’s Education Association annual reading motivation and awareness program that encourages children to spend a day with a good book. This special day is celebrated on March 2, which is the birthday of beloved children’s author, Dr. Seuss.
The Hilo Public Library is celebrating this special day on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 in the Children's Room from 1-6 pm with a read-a-thon and Read Across America Passports.
Children and a loved one may get comfy and cozy in the children’s department with sleeping bags, pillows, stuffed animals and pjs (provided by participants) during the read-a-thon. Participants may determine how long they would like to spend reading their favorite books. Children who come and spend time reading receive a free gift for participating. Parents who have toddlers and would like to read to their little ones may also participate.
The Read Across America passport are given by the children’s department during this celebration to encourage children to read books that take place in different states. There is a special display highlighting books from various states which may be borrowed.
This program is free and intended for patrons up to 12 years of age. Program schedule is subject to change. Please contact the library (933-8888) 10 days in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if other special accommodation is needed.
