A Volunteer Experience like no other… Departing from The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, we’ll ascend the mountain to the Puu Laau dry forest- the last remaining habitat of the Palila bird. After climbing off-road into the cool dry climate above 6,000 ft. elevation we’ll take an easy forest walk in search of the Palila and other native Hawaiian birds. Following the walk we’ll travel to our worksite and join a volunteer from the Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project for a deli style lunch in the forest. After lunch its off to work with your Restoration Project volunteer, collecting precious Mamane seeds or planting trees that will help to re-establish the endangered Palila’s habitat. Departing this precious habitat, we’ll make our way back down the mountain reflecting upon the positive impact our day will have on generations to come.
