Music with Bailey Matsuda

Local music educator Bailey Matsuda will take you on a musical journey through time as well as geography. It will start in West Africa with the historical significance of the slave trade on music. Bailey will also trace one key rhythm from West Africa to Brazil to Trinidad to Cuba to New Orleans to Chicago to New York. He will take elements of this rhythm that started back in West Africa and show how it occurs in the “swing” feel of blues music from Chicago. This 45-minute program is suitable for ages 5 and older. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.

This is a production of the University of Hawaii at Mānoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program with additional funding and support provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the University of Hawai’i.
