The Wai’anae Book Club invites readers in grades 4 and up to join the adults for a discussion of this Newbery Award winning classic.
In 1994 Lois Lowry earned the Newbery Medal for The Giver, the first of a four-part series that examines a flawed utopian society. The story is riveting — “and the book is one of the most thought-provoking novels for children ever written” says Common-Sense Media. Karen Ray claims “The Giver [is] a powerful and provocative novel, […] sure to keep older children reading, and thinking,” in her 1993 review in the New York Times Sunday Book Review.
