New research has found a number of risk factors that can increase the risk of having a child with autism. Dr. Taketa-Wong will explain how to reduce the risk before and during pregnancy, and in early childhood. There are also underlying medical causes of autism, that when treated, can bring amazing changes in language and behavior. You will learn evidence-based ways to reduce the risk of autism, as well as the latest science on successful medical treatment.
Dr. Kathryn Taketa-Wong is Hawaii's leader in the prevention and medical treatment of autism and other special needs. She is a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist with two degrees from the National University of Natural Medicine in Oregon, a medical degree in naturopathic medicine and a master’s degree in Oriental Medicine. In addition, Dr. Taketa-Wong received specialized training through the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs and the Autism Research Institute. She was inspired to be a doctor by her brother, who was diagnosed with autism nearly three decades ago, and has dedicated her life to helping him and others like him. Her brother did not speak until age 3 and has progressed from there to working at the same local diner for the past 14 years.
