Between 1900 and 1935 some of the islands’ most renowned scenic drives were built, including the Hāna Belt Road, Haleakalā Highway, and roads to and around Kīlauea Volcano.
This illustrated presentation will discuss some of the political, economic, and technical challenges of road building in Hawaiʻi, while also explaining why these roads are important in contemporary Hawaiʻi.
