In July, 2017, the Molokai Arts Center sponsored the internationally known artist, James Jack to Molokai for a month long residency. Jack is currently completing work on a project called, “The Moloka’i Window: Stories in dirt” which is about connecting people and place by creating artwork from people’s stories and samples of soil from where they live. During his residency here on Molokai, Jack visited with many different locals gathering their stories in dirt. His sketchbook contains many dirt rubbings from the sites that these stories are gathered from.

This workshop will explore the creative process of painting with Dirt. “Earth is the source of our life and it is what we will become after dying. First, meditative exercises will lead participants deep into the realm of imagination. Each breath we breathe is a gift from the earth. Painting with dirt opens imaginative spaces for us to become reacquainted with earth. Sketching with local dirt samples will open a new world from the earth we touch every day. Sensitively touching the earth is like touching ourselves. What can you discover about yourself while touching the earth? Come explore the colorful world of dirt together as we find creative ways of reconnecting with the earth.”

“Jack is an artist who has developed socially engaged art projects for the Honolulu Museum of Art, Setouchi International Art Festival, Busan Biennale Sea Art Festival, Art Base Momshima and the Mizunoki Museum. His works on paper have been featured in exhibitions held at galleries in Tokyo, New York City, Yokohama, Portland, Kyoto and Singapore. His writings have been featured in Art Asia Pacific, The Japan Times, Modern Art Asia, Tokyo Art Beat and art catalogs published by Blum & Poe Gallery, LASALLE College of the Arts, Satoshi Koyama Gallery and The Contemporary Museum of Hawai‘i.”

The “Moloka’i Window: Stories in Dirt” will be on exhibit at the Honolulu Museum of Art April 27, 2018 through the month of September, 2018.
