Yoshiko Okuyama will talk about her new book, Japanese Mythology in Film, on her book talk tour funded by the Hawai'i Council for the Humanities.
This free public event to the residents of Hawai'i Island aims to help ancestral roots through filmic images, as well as cinema fans to uncover cultural tropes used in popular film and anime from Japan.
Mythological beliefs and legends, including myths brought by the Japanese immigrated to Hawai'i, will be highlighted using movie clips to show how culture-specific, spiritual metaphors and motifs are hidden in recent Japanese films and anime, such as: ‘Mushi-shi', ‘Princess Mononoke', ‘Onmyoji', and ‘Departures'.
This program is free and suitable for all ages. Program schedule is subject to change.
