Big Island Biodynamic Farms
Malama Ka'Aina Farm
The Kohala Farm Sanctuary was initially designed & planted by world-renowned tropical permaculture expert Douglas Bullock, who has cultivated a deep understanding of natural design principles. Our farm was developed as part of a 4-month tropical permaculture course that we held on our land. Douglas' intent was to create a showcase permaculture farm and arboretum established according to natural design principles. As the farm has grown, many of these intentions are being abundantly fulfilled. Adding generous portions of biodynamic gardening wisdom to the mix, David Guyer-Stevens took over as chief gardener of the aina after Doug Bullock returned to his main center on Orcas Island and resumed his teaching and travels around the world. In later years, much of the farm's development was stewarded by Don May, former co-founder of the La'akea Permaculture Gardens on the Big Island. Don's inspired design work in installing many of the newer gardens, ponds, bamboo groves and orchards was invaluable. Many lessons and refinements await us in the years to come.

As a result of the Ola Honua mission, we the employees have bought the bamboo business from the owners and are now a bonafide employee-owned cooperative.
Our 20 acre bamboo plantation is now the source for Hawai'i's most sustainable building material: bamboo timber poles. After six relatively short years we are selling timber in 1 to 4 inch diameter sizes of various high-quality species, including the gorgeous black bamboos that maintain their dark color even after curing. Our timber poles are available for purchase on Maui at Kula Hardware & Nursery, and world-wide directly from our farm.
Our native restoration and exotic tropical timber plantings are also growing and maturing at astounding rates and we are even beginning to thin stands resulting in a small inventory of hardwood poles for sale.
We have expanded our plant nursery, where we cultivate 12 species of bamboo, to include dozens of tropical and exotic fruiting and flowering trees for sale. Click here for species list and call (808) 248-7561 for prices and current sales. Our staff will gladly answer questions or advise plant selection.

Our perspective:
Our farm and farmers together become like a self sufficient organism: using the resources of the sun, soil, and water to grow inputs needed to propogate a hearty compost where fruits, vegetables and mutually dependent livestock can thrive. With proper managment, we can reduce or eliminate the need for outside inputs.
Our goal is to build a balanced, nutrient-rich soil, full of life. We build and restore the soil using a variey of techniques, traditions and technologies including biodynamics, composting, natural farming and permaculture (restorative agriculture). We address pests and weeds through an integrated approach and, when needed, use organic pest control remedies that we make ourselves using ingredients from the farm (neem, chile, etc).
We use the tools of crop rotation, green manures, compost building, permaculture, forage crops and hope to show that family and community-sized organic farms are a viable and necessary alternative for the future of farming in Hawaii.
