Dr. Susan Jarvi of the University of Hawai'i at Hilo will give a presentation on Rat Lungworm Disease. At least 60 cases of rat lungworm disease have been documented in people in Hawai'i, most of them from the Puna district of the island. Effects can be mild and flu-like, but some infected people have developed long-term disabilities, and some have died.
Dr. Jarvi will explain important precautions we can take to protect ourselves, and she will outline her research and education efforts as part of the Hawai'i Island Rat Lungworm Disease Working Group. She will also talk about the cost and impact the disease has made.
Program is free and is suitable for people ages 12 and older. Program schedule is subject to change.
