On Friday, May 1, celebrate Lei Day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Kapi‘olani Park’s bandstand. Lei Day began in 1928 as a way to perpetuate the wearing of lei; it brought together a community, with many people stringing their own lei to wear during the day. Schools also began Lei Day programs with singing, dancing and royal courts. At this year’s City and County of Honolulu's 88th Annual Lei Day Celebration, the traditions continue. The day’s festivities open with the Royal Hawaiian Band, followed by hula, the 2015 Lei Queen and court, and performances by Melveen Leed, Mark Yamanaka and Hū‘ewa.
