The Makahiki Season is a combination of New Years and Thanksgiving, dedicated to the god Lono, when competitions in hula, athletics and oratory were held. The arrival of Captain Cook during this celebration may have led the Hawaiians to the idea that Cook was the god returning to Kealakekua as promised in his legend.
Come hear Boyd Bond, local historian and master storyteller, recount this celebration as the Makahiki Season draws to a close in February.
