Plant Aloha (FREE Class) Seed Saving with Ilana Stout

Thursday, October 19th 2017 – 9:00am-12:30pm
Seed Saving for the Home Gardener, with Ilana Stout, will teach participants how to save and store high quality, locally adapted seeds for use in their garden or for sharing in the community. Topics will include basic reproductive biology of flowering plants, processing techniques, equipment, best storage practices and germination testing.

Students are encouraged to bring any clean, dry, pest and soil free seeds they would like to share in a seed exchange at the end of the class.

Instructor, Ilana Stout, is a gardener and sustainability educator. She has taught in Hawaiʻi for over 10 years and is currently a a science teacher at Hawai'i Community College. Her classes focus on environmental justice, sustainability and food systems. She is also a graduate student who studies seed & plant sharing networks in the Hawaiian Islands. Her focus is on strengthening these systems in order to preserve both biodiversity and agricultural knowledge for future generations.

Each class starts promptly with a lecture and Q&A before hands-on farm learning ~ Come prepared with notepad and writing utensil, closed toed shoes, sun hat, and gloves.
