Flower Vases of Tea Ceremony Exhibit

The hanaire (flower vase) with chabana (flowers) and ojiku (scroll) are prominently displayed in the alcove of a tea room. Each guest in a tea ceremony visits the alcove and respectfully views these tea utensils prior to the tea ceremony (sadou). As such, the hanaire plays a very important role in sadou. This exhibit of traditional hanaire is presented by Shofu Kai, a group of ceramists at the Hawai’i Potters’ Guild who have been studying together to learn about the artistry of utensils used in the Japanese tea ceremony, a cornerstone of Japanese culture.
