the Mothers of Kauai’s Railroading History:
1881 Princesses Liliuokalani Pounds First RR spike on Kauai at Kilauea Sugar Plantation. Liliuokalani trusted the railways would “gird the whole island and so develop its resources and promote the industry of its people,”
1975 Mabel Wilcox restored steam Locomotive ‘WAINIHA’, Hawaii’s ‘Last Steam Sugar Cane Train’. Miss Mabel Wilcox, whose legacy provides the world’s largest collection of operating Hawaii sugar plantation steam trains
Miss Mabel, the niece of Grove Farm plantation owner G.N. Wilcox, is why Kauai still has operating sugar cane locomotives. “Miss Mabel’s preservation of Kauai history, seen through the protection of the sites where her missionary heritage placed its roots in island soil.
