YES! A Memoir of Modern Hawaii with Walter A. Dods Jr.

Walter A. Dods Jr. is the retired chairman and CEO of BancWest and its subsidiary First Hawaiian Bank, the largest banking institution in the State of Hawaiʻi. He currently serves as chairman of the board of Matson Inc., a publically-traded Honolulu-based shipping company. He currently serves on several boards including Bank of the West, Pacific Guardian Life, Hawaiian Telcom, Pohaku Pa and Servco Pacific Inc. Most recently, he joined the board of Houston-based Par Petroleum Corp. Other notable positions he has held include past president of the American Bankers Association and former advisory council member to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

Walter Dods’ impact on the State of Hawaiʻi is unparalleled. His accomplishments in business, influence in government and strong commitment to the community truly serves as an inspiration to students and business professionals worldwide. Mr. Dods holds more than three decades of corporate experience at the highest levels of executive leadership. He currently serves as chairman of the board of Honolulu-based Matson Inc., a publically-traded shipping company. However, Mr. Dods is most recognized for leading Hawaiʻi’s largest bank for three decades and growing it into one of the 25 largest banks in the nation.

Mr. Dods is also recognized for his philanthropic and community endeavors. Over the years, he has spearheaded major fundraising efforts for a number of non-profit organizations and served on the board of an array of charities including the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii, The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, the Hawaii Visitors Bureau, Hawaii Employers Council, and Honolulu Museum of Art to name just a few.

Some of his more notable non-profit ventures have included chairing the committee that built the Hawaii Blood Bank building, raising funds to build Saint Louis Schools’ Mamiya Theatre and helping United Way with its annual fundraising campaign. Dods and his wife Diane also established a million dollar fund for a University of Hawaiʻi scholarship program for immigrants.
